Why I Tell People I Sell Life Insurance

What do you get when you cross a Dr V with an Apple pencil? (Aside from bad art, but that goes without saying.) A new set of cartoons, that’s what!

When I was in vet school, I was (rightfully) proud of my fledgling career choice. I shouted it from the rooftops: I’m about to be a vet! It’s so cool! Check it out! Tell me everything about your guinea pig!

But of course, with age comes both wisdom and boundaries, as well as an understanding that many people lack both. So without further ado, here are but three of the many reasons that I avoid telling people what I do unless absolutely necessary.

And before you ask, yes, all three have happened to me. :)

Foxhunting with Weimaraners in Estonia

These are the big European red foxes, and yes, Weimaraners are gun dogs, but they have more applications in Europe than just “bird dogs.”

KITTYKIND THANKS “ROOM” DIRECTOR LENNY ABRAHAMSON FOR HALO OSCARS DONATION

kittykind2KittyKind.org recently shared this on Facebook:

“Lenny Abrahamson, the director of the incredible movie “Room”, was nominated for Best Director this year. As part of Lenny’s Oscar nomination gift bag, Freekibble.com and GreaterGood.org offered him the option of donating 10,000 Halo meals to the shelter of his choice.

He chose KittyKind! And we chose to give those meals to as many rescuers who feed community cats as we could possibly help.

The results: On Saturday, April 9, 2016, KittyKind distributed 136 bags of high-quality, salmon-flavored Halo Spot’s Stew (1,168 pounds of food!!), to over 20 colony caretakers.

This distribution is helping to feed OVER 1,000 COMMUNITY CATS! On Saturday, we worked together to make a difference for some of NYC’s biggest heroes.

Infinite thanks to @Freekibblecom, @GreaterGoodorg, @LennyAbrahamson, and @Halopets for making this possible.”

When Halo asked if the cats were enjoying the food and if the donation was helpful? This was the response….

“Are you kidding? This probably the best food most of these cats have ever had. Not one single complaint from the rescuers, only tears of joy about the high quality of the food.”

America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest halted due to cyber-bullying: Finalists to be honored collectively

Reported in AVMF NEWS, the following was announced:

“America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest Halted Due to Cyber-Bullying – Finalists to be Honored Collectively”

“The 2015 America’s Favorite Veterinarian Contest has been halted, and we have declared all 20 finalists “America’s Favorite Veterinarians” following a vicious cyber-bullying attack which disrupted and contaminated the final election process. Activists opposed to cat declawing “hijacked” the contest, resorting to cyber-bullying the majority of the contest finalists. The attacks were reprehensible and undeserved, and have undermined the spirit of the competition and caused the contestants undue harm. Read the press release for more information.

“We thank you for your interest in the contest, and we are truly sorry for what has happened. Our contestants deserve the utmost respect for what they do every day as veterinarians. We ask that those who are bullying these contestants immediately stop. Please join us in honoring these veterinarians with the respect they deserve.”

12 Weeks of Emmett

Way back when, over two years ago now, I shared with you guys a little project I was doing with our daughter Essley. At that time I was a new mama, and pretty much every parent I knew was repeatedly telling me I needed to pay attention to the details as much as I possibly could because our baby would change so much, so quickly, that we wouldn’t know what hit us. And while parental advice should be taken with a grain of salt (truly), this was something that we learned to be very true. So we decided to take a weekly picture of her for one year. In the end, it was quite incredible (you can see a video of all the pics put together here).

When I was pregnant with Emmett, I told Robbie that there was no way in all hell I was doing weekly pictures again. I’ll be honest with you guys – by the time we got to 52 weeks with Essley I was so. over. it. It felt a like a chore. For her second year we did monthly pictures which was much more feasible. But once Emmett was born, and we watched him change so much just in his first few days of life, we decided that we needed to do it again. And I know we’ll be so glad we did.

I likely won’t share one of these again here until we’ve completed the entire year, but I remember sharing the first 12 weeks of Essley here so I thought I’d do the same for Emmett. Babies change more in the first 3 months than the rest of the first couple of years combined. It’s intense, man. Looking at his first week picture in comparison with the most recent (he’s actually 13 weeks now) is sort of mind blowing. And for those of you who know my husband in person or have seen photos of him, I think you’ll agree that this child is basically Robbie’s clone. I mean, seriously – put Robbie in a shrinking machine and you’ll get Emmett. It’s hilarious and awesome.

It will be really cool to show these to our kids when they’re grown up, I think. When my sister and I were babies, there was nothing even close to what we have now, literally at our fingertips, in terms of recording the transformation of our children. As always, thanks for following along on our journey!
