So excellent. I'm very happy for the whole family.

I've been privileged to introduce two different Amstaffs to the wonderful world of cats. Both adored the cat and were very gentle their whole lives. Takes time and patience.

Observant Dog Saves Elderly Neighbor

Zeus the Observant Dog

Sometimes people worry about living next door to a dog. For one elderly man in Australia, he’s lucky that he did. After falling in his backyard and being unable to get help, Zeus, a neighbor’s observant dog, came to the rescue.

According to The Weekend Courier Community, the 96-year-old man had fallen in his backyard and injured himself. He was unable to get up and was not easily visible. After falling, he lay in the backyard for more than two days, becoming severely dehydrated. Then, the man’s neighbor, Mick Condo, noticed his dog staying near the fence separating their properties. Zeus, a black Staffordshire Terrier-type dog was whimpering, too, which also caught Mick’s attention.

According to Mick, Zeus “was whining for about an hour and wouldn’t come away from the fence.” Mick listened hard and, in his words, “heard a faint ‘please help me’ and I realized my elderly neighbor was in trouble.”

Millennials and Their Music

Today at the gym I got into one of those really useful insightful discussions with a bearded, man-bun BilaBong millennial – yeah those guys – about the best workout music so to get out of my ‘Why so serious?’ posts tonight I write about 80s dance music.
Warning – be prepared to relive your youth or learn how to really be hip

Exhibit A for the prosecution.  New York, New York by Micro Chip League (MCL).  A staple at Curfew Austin and when it played the whole club lit up with glow ropes.  Listening to it now it’s some strange synthetic segue from 50s swing to the rave scene incorporating the Atari man voice.  How cool is that?
Exhibit B.  Why the newfound unhealthy obsession with Russia eludes me but hey kids this song came out before the wall came down when we were at the brink with communism.  Look if you’re going to spazz out about the return of the good ole USSR – at least do so to dance and what better than CCCP American Soviets
Exhibit C.  And while you’re getting a history lesson I know this may burst your little snowflake bubbles but you didn’t invent protesting racism, sexism, fascism.  Gen 80s didn’t either but unlike the great lyricists before us viz., Lennon & Dylan, we made it all freaky cool.  Lose the anger on the FLOOR!  Consolidated.
Definitely on the playlist tonight:  A Split Second Rigor Mortis, Front 242 Headhunter, Nitzer Ebb Join in the Chant
There’s more – oh so many more – but at this point I fear the millennials are running for their safe zones.
——–
YBD’s Notes 1:  Actually, I have a fondness for Millennials – they’re rather cute.  In all seriousness, fool is the one who doesn’t learn from the youth.  However….
YBD’s Notes 2:  The sooner millennials learn this French phrase the better prepared for life you’ll be:  ’Plus ca change plus c’est la meme chose.’  You’re really not that special my friends.  And your music kinda sucks although some of it is retro 80s now and getting interesting.
YBD’s Notes 3:  Back in the day, us old timers didn’t have no Internet and we couldn’t understand a single thing most of these songs were saying.  But that wasn’t really the point to it.  So if’n one of you whippersnappers look up the lyrics, don’t waste yer time posting if you’re offended.  I don’t care and I’m too busy dancing.

The Lost Brother

While at dinner with my family in San Antonio last week Jon said grace and in his prayer he thanked God that ‘Our lost brother has come home’.
Today I leave Memphis to return to New England to tell this story.  As you know I’ve tried in the past and either the timing or platform or partners didn’t pan out.  Events that have transpired in recent months have convinced me the time is now.
Admittedly the problem has primarily been me or more specifically the standards I set for it.  Just as with the two walks I wanted to do something no one else has before and relegating the story to the Christian book market or a PBS special was unacceptable.  Even a film festival documentary didn’t seem sufficient.
The epidemic of cancer in our companions demands and deserves the widest audience possible and I’ve always pushed and pushed to that end.  But one lesson I’ve learned repeatedly is you cannot depend on anyone else to realize your vision and like life on the road it’s you and you alone.
I now know how to tell this story and the manner in which to tell it so once again I set off into uncharted waters.
Brother, I am lost no longer.

Dog or Doll?

It’s pouring with rain in Naples.  This little poodle, wearing his smart raincoat, sleeps in his owner’s arms as they shelter from the rain.

This is one of the photos in my display ‘A Love Letter to Naples’ at PhotoMenton this year – open every day till next Sunday at the Palais de l’Europe, Menton.

My Little Loves

My Little Loves
My Little Loves
My Little Loves

I’m feeling really sentimental today you guys. So rather than doing one of the usual design/style/food/inspiration posts, I’m just going to gush (don’t worry, I’ll keep it short) about my kids. I know they make an occasional appearance around here (Essley freaking loves to have her picture taken which is simultaneously endearing and terrifying), but aside from the intermittent mention and the posts I’ve done to spread the word about epilepsy and Emmett’s story, I don’t really do posts dedicated to just them. This is partly because as much as I like to keep this space authentic and share bits and pieces of my personal life, I choose to keep the majority of theirs private. But it’s also because I don’t want to bore you guys with the mundane things that they do that I find utterly thrilling and fascinating. But today, I’m going to go ahead and bore you, just for a minute.

Essley is now 3 years old and almost 6 months into her first year of preschool (if you count two days a week for a couple hours as actual preschool). She adores it. In her progress report her teachers said she is good helper, an excellent communicator, and cheerfully participates in all activities. (I’m not sure her at home progress report would be quite so glowing, but I’ll take it.) She absolutely loves ballet and practices her recital routine at home everyday. She is still obsessed with dogs, loves road trips and cooking and playing soccer and watching movies, and wants to “make art” 24/7. Pink and sparkles are her everything (so not like mommy). She is the pickiest eater I’ve ever known and is fiercely independent (but still ends up sleeping in our bed every night) and very feisty and drives me crazy but man do I love her with every ounce of my being. She honestly is my best friend in the whole world.

Emmett is 13 months old and is continuing to defy all odds. He is almost 7 months seizure free and his development is 100% on track. Our little miracle! His story was featured on the front page of the Daily Herald (largest newspaper covering the entire extended Chicago suburban area) and the featured story on their website last week, which was just incredible because it meant millions of people were potentially made aware of Infantile Spasms (which could potentially save lives). He took his first step in January and is now walking everywhere. (There is truly nothing more hilarious than seeing a new walker stumble around. It reminds me of watching friends walk home from the bar at 3 AM in college and it is amazing.) He loves Elmo and Peppa Pig and reading books and playing with his sister and exploring absolutely everything. He is both the happiest and saddest little person I’ve ever known. He laughs so hard it makes me cry and he cries so hard it makes my anxiety level reach new heights. He wants his mommy like all the time man (the world ends for him if he sees me leave the room), but he plays so well with others at such a young age which is truly the most wonderful thing to watch. He is my heart.

That’s about it for now. I mean, I could go on and on but I’ll spare you my blubbering. And hey, you can always follow our adventures on my Instagram if you want more. Thanks for letting me share, friends!
