Toby and Ylan

This is Toby – a three month old Staffordshire bull terrier pup who lives in Gorbio village. In the third photo you see him running across the square with Ylan. Is there anything nicer than a young boy and a young dog happy together.

I’m familiar with ticks at Sunol Regional Wilderness; they’re part of the cost of business when hiking up there. However, the ticks I’ve seen in the past have been Deer Ticks, which have a distinctive look, almost black, partially shiny and partially furry.

This one is very different; I’ve never seen a "dusty tick" before. Any help in identifying this would be very welcome!!

GIVEAWAY // Win a Sun Glow Duo Self-Tanning Set from Skin Authority (+ My Personal Review)

GIVEAWAY // Win a Sun Glow Duo Self-Tanning Set from Skin Authority and Bubby & Bean!

Back in the day, I used to slather myself in suntan oil and literally bake in the sun in an effort to get a ‘bronze glow’ (which, on several occasions, resulted instead in a miserable red burn).  I even visited the the tanning bed from time to time.  Thankfully, I eventually accepted the fact that as much as I loved a tan in the summertime, I was taking the unhealthy route to get there.  Since then, if I’m going to be outside under a hot sun, I’ve used sunscreen.  And if I want a sun-kissed look, I’ve opted for self tanner.  Unfortunately though, as we all know, self tanners can be tricky, and more times than not end up leaving you a streaky, orange mess. I’ve learned that a lot of times, this unwanted effect is caused by a build up of dead skin.  So when the folks over at Skin Authority asked if I wanted to try their new Sun Glow Duo, which includes a special exfoliating cleanser to prevent streakiness (and is vegetarian!), I was all about it.

I’d just been in Arizona so my normally pasty pale skin did have a tiny head start, but my legs needed a boost.  So although I used the Sun Glow Duo on my entire body, I concentrated on my legs.  Over a period of a couple of weeks, I first applied the Exfoliating Cleanser, then the Sunless Tanner.  The Exfoliating Cleanser worked wonders, both on my face and my body, removing dead skin cells with its natural pumice and sugar cane derived exfoliators.  My skin felt all sorts of soft.  The Sunless Tanner went on smoothly, lacked that awful artificial tanning scent (thank goodness), and absorbed quickly.  It also moisturized my skin, and provided help in fighting free radical damage with its Vitamin C and E formula.  And I love that it contains no fragrances, parabens, or harmful dyes.  Within an hour of the first appplication, I started to see a nice tan color.  After using the Duo every few days for two weeks, I had a rich tan that was even and natural looking. I’m looking forward to using it on a regular basis as summertime approaches. (The Sun Glow Duo is available for purchase from April 1 through June 30, 2014.)

Flea Eggs, picked up from John’s Sweater

The fleas are all over the cat, who will scratch and bite if I approach with the flea comb.

I’m not even considering a bath and shampoo!

I guess you can clicker-train moggies to put up with almost anything, but this one will sniff and dither before deigning to accept a treat. Not like a dog who swallows everything on sight.

Oh, and he doesn’t like raw chicken. Only crunchy junk-food pellets.

The Confounding Power of God, The Christian and the Bible By Robin Calamaio {Guest Article}

To study the written words of the Bible is an objective exercise. The words are right there – in black and white. A Christian apologist is one who defends the Biblical record from internal – and external – assaults. “Apologist,” comes from a compound Greek word, “apologia” – “apo” (from) + “logos” (a word, or…

Foot Wax, Proper Care of Pads Makes Winter Easier on Dogs

Walking Kia around the neighborhood track was always a joy. We followed the same course each day and she was a happy chow mix – until the day she stopped mid walk and began whining and crying, She held her paws up and would not continue walking. At first glance, I saw no cuts or injury. But after removing my gloves and inspecting closer, I noticed ice had formed on the hair between her toes and was causing her pain. I rubbed her feet until they thawed and we headed back home.snow-dog

This winter much of the country has been experiencing record cold temperatures and snowfall. Many areas have seen temperatures drop to below zero with windchills at -25 to -40 degrees. This cold temperature is a danger to dogs and dog walkers.

Protecting a dog’s paws is essential in these conditions.

We all know that street salt can burn a dog’s pads and cause extreme pain. While pet-safe salt might be used on the driveway at a pet’s home, it can be hard to avoid on the street. When returning from a walk, sitters should thoroughly wash and dry a dog’s feet to remove the salt – protecting the paws and preventing the pet from licking and ingesting the salt.

A good solution to protect dog’s feet is to coat them with a paw wax in advance. The wax – similar to a petroleum jelly is a natural solution to keep dog paws soft and free of pain. There are several brands known as musher’s wax – invented for sled dogs in Canada.

Friends and customer’s introduced to the wax this year, report great success.

One customer reported having a problem this year because her dog Ellie was extremely sensitive to rock salt. Ellie was in pain on walks and didn’t want to go out.

“The Musher’s salve is fantastic!”  she reports. “Works wonders. Is made of all natural wax. No need to wash it off; just wipe with a soft cloth. Ellie went nuts, ran like crazy and pooped a ton.”dog(1)

Another customer, with a chihuahua found her pet did not want to go out this winter, until she started applying wax to her feet.

“It seems to help Poppins a lot. If I forget to put it on her, she starts to limp right away. If it is on, she leaps around and wants to stay out longer!” she said.

Dogs with longer hair between their toes, like Kia, should be groomed so the hair is clipped short to prevent ice build-up in this sensitive area.

The hair on feet should be kept even with the pads. Avoid cutting it too short or the fur won’t offer protection from the snow. To avoid trimming out too much hair, keep your scissors even with your dog’s pads and cut the hair that sticks out.
